Grammar Post--Lay or Lie

Here are a couple of words that I always seem to mix-up--lay and lie. Below is the answer I found on Purdue's Online Writing Lab:

"Lay" is to physically place something somewhere.

Lay (place) the pencil on the table.
Lay (place) the money in my hand.

"Lie" refers to the act of reclining or lying down.

I am going to lie down and sleep.
You cannot phsically pick yourself up and PLACE yourself somewhere. You "lie" down; you "lay" an object somewhere

  1. That is awesome I always wondered that but always forget to look it up. It makes a lot of sense now. I also like that it say "you cannot physically pick yourself up" haha

  2. I did something similar in my latest post, it's good that someone else is able to identify the problem.
